Week 3

For my thrid full week interning at United Ministries, I had the opportunity to sit in on an adult education course for students who had successfully completed the GED program. I was warned that this would be kind of redundant or dull, but I took a lot away from it, as I learned that many of these students lacked accountability for their financial situations, and really it’s remarkable what a difference accountability can make. Most of the students were adult males and single/divorced, which explains the lack of accountability. What warmed my heart, however, was the majority of the students knew they had a problem, which is the first step to fixing it and getting their lives back on track.

Week 2

For my second full week of interning, one activity that had a major impact on me was delivering toiletry bags to people living in homeless encampments just off the Swamp Rabbit Trail. While we were unable to locate anybody, it shocked me the conditions these people lived in: broken tents, bug infested area, and above all completely unsanitary for someone to be living in. I had heard horror stories about these encampments from back in 2013, however getting a first look for myself at these camps really stood out to me.

First Day at United Ministries

My first day of interning went rather smoothly, as I was oriented by Mr. Friddle into the assignments I would be performing. United Minsitries operates from 3 seperate bulidings and it serves to better meet the needs of as many people as possible; a really unique feature that intrigues me about the organization. Tomorrow, I start in what is called the “EA”, and this deals with the areas of emergency in United Ministries. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store for me!

Introductory blog

Hello fellow PVS interns! My name is Sam Johnson and this summer I will be heading to United Ministries to complete my Poverty Studies internship. United Ministries is a non-profit organization that hopes to ensure self-sufficiency and promote the welfare of everyone living in the Greenville area. My assignments will vary in the upcoming weeks, however I will be doing assignments that include moving furniture, tutoring citizens attempting to obtain a GED and assisting those with severe physical and mental disabilities. My expectation of this internship is not only to have my mind blown, but to also understand how citizens in extreme poverty function and what they’re day-to-day lives look like. I’ve been taught what I could potentially see in my PVS courses, but this is where I would really hope to see the things we’ve discussed in class come to life. It should be an enriching experience and I can’t wait to get started!
